For Such a Time as This..

The other day, I was sitting with my son, looking through books and pictures of stars, galaxies, nebulae, and the vast wonders of God’s creation. As we turned page after page, marveling at the beauty and scale of the universe, I found myself quietly reflecting.

A question arose in my heart: Why am I here—for a time such as this?

Of all the generations that have ever lived, why did God choose that I would be born now? Why not a thousand years ago? Why not centuries into the future? Why this moment in history?
The more I thought about it, the more I was filled with wonder.

Scientists tell us that many of the elements that make up our bodies were forged in stars long before the Earth existed. Every generation before us, every event in history, every circumstance that preceded our birth led to this very moment. Humanly speaking, the odds of our existence are beyond comprehension.

Yet what appears astonishing to human reason is no surprise to God. Long before we were born, He knew us. “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you” (Jeremiah 1:5). Long before we took our first breath, He ordained our days.

“Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be”(Psalm 139:16).
Science can help us understand how we came to be, but only God can reveal why we are here.

The more we learn about the universe, the more breathtaking it becomes. Humanity can peer into distant galaxies, study the origins of the cosmos, and marvel at the intricate design woven throughout creation. Yet thousands of years before the invention of telescopes, David looked up at the heavens and declared: “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands” (Psalm 19:1).

Creation inspires wonder, but Scripture teaches us that wonder is meant to lead us to worship.

The universe is vast, but it is not ultimate. The stars are magnificent, but they are not our destination. They point beyond themselves to the One who spoke them into existence.

The same God who set galaxies in motion is the God who knit us together in our mother’s womb (Psalm 139:13). The same God who calls each star by name also knows us personally. The same God who sustains the universe by His power has a purpose for every life He creates.

This means that our existence is not an accident. We are not random collections of atoms drifting through a meaningless universe. We are God’s workmanship, intentionally created and lovingly sustained by Him.

As Paul writes: “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do”(Ephesians 2:10).

That truth changes everything. The question is no longer, “How did I get here?” The question becomes, “Why has God placed me here?“

Scripture gives a clear answer. We are here to know God, love Him, worship Him, and glorify Him. We are here to reflect His character, to serve others, to proclaim His goodness, and to participate in His redemptive work in the world.

Like Esther, perhaps we have been placed where we are “for such a time as this” (Esther 4:14). Like Paul, we have a race to run and a calling to fulfill (2 Timothy 4:7).

Like every believer before us, we are entrusted with the stewardship of this brief life for the glory of God. One day, our time on earth will come to an end. The question then will not be how much we knew about the universe, how successful we became, or how comfortable our lives were.

The question will be whether we faithfully lived for the One who gave us life. Every breath is a gift from God.
Every day is ordained by God.
Every opportunity is entrusted by God.

The real question is not why you are alive at this moment in history. The real question is what you will do with the moment God has given you.

May we live in such a way that, when our race is finished, we can say with Paul: “For to me, to live is Christ” (Philippians 1:21).

And may every day entrusted to us become an act of worship to the One who created us, redeemed us, and called us according to His purpose.

A Prayer

Heavenly Father,

As I consider the vastness of Your creation—the stars, the galaxies, and the countless wonders of the heavens—I am humbled by the thought that the God who created all things also knows me by name. Thank You for the gift of life. Thank You that my existence is not an accident, but part of Your loving and eternal purpose. Before I was formed, You knew me. Before I lived a single day, You had already written my story in Your book.

Lord, help me not to waste the life You have entrusted to me. Teach me to number my days, that I may gain a heart of wisdom. Open my eyes to the opportunities You place before me each day. May my words honor You, my actions reflect You, and my life point others to You. When I am tempted to live for lesser things, remind me that I was created for Your glory. When I lose sight of my purpose, draw me back to Christ. And when I wonder why I am here, help me remember that You have placed me here for such a time as this.

May every breath You give me become an offering of praise, every day an opportunity to serve, and every moment a testimony to Your grace.
