Week 6: Exodus Chapters 1 to 20

Before the Exodus begins: A Recap of Week 5

As we close Week 5, we’ve walked through Genesis and Job, witnessing creation, covenant, faith, human failure, suffering, and God’s faithful hand guiding His people through every twist and turn. We’ve seen God’s promises unfold, even through human weakness, and His love and redemption revealed in the lives of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, and Job.

This week, we step into Exodus 1–20 — a new chapter in God’s unfolding story. Here we will see His faithfulness to the descendants of Abraham, their growth in Egypt, the rise of a deliverer, and God’s mighty acts to save His people. We’ll explore themes of oppression and deliverance, faith and obedience, God’s power and provision, and His desire to dwell among His people.

Get ready to witness God’s incredible hand at work through Moses, the plagues, the Passover, and the journey toward freedom, all while reflecting on what these events teach us about His character and plan — and how it still speaks into our lives today.

Exodus Chapters 1 to 3

From Promise Preserved to Deliverance Prepared.. We ended Genesis with Joseph’s death (Gen 50:26), but not with the end of God’s promises. Exodus opens by reminding us of names—the sons of Jacob (Exod 1:1–5). This is intentional. God is saying: I have not forgotten.

Exodus Chapter 4

When Calling Meets Resistance… As we move deeper into Exodus, chapter 4 feels raw, uncomfortable, and deeply human. God has revealed Himself in fire, spoken His covenant name, and clearly commissioned Moses. Yet instead of bold obedience, we encounter hesitation, excuses, fear—and even divine anger. This chapter teaches us that calling does not eliminate weakness, and faith does not always arrive fully formed.

Exodus Chapters 5 to 7

When Obedience Makes Things Worse.. At the end of Genesis, God’s promises felt distant but intact. By Exodus 3–4, God has spoken clearly, revealed His name, and sent His chosen deliverer. Now, in chapters 5–7, we face a sobering reality: obedience does not immediately lead to relief. In fact, it often makes things worse—before redemption begins.

Exodus 8-10

When Power Is Confronted and the Heart Is Exposed… By the time we reach Exodus 8–10, the question is no longer whether God is powerful. That has already been demonstrated.
The question now is: What happens to the human heart when God’s power becomes undeniable?

These chapters show us that miracles alone do not produce repentance. In fact, repeated encounters with God can either soften a heart—or harden it.

Exodus Chapters 11 to 13

From Judgment to Redemption: When the Blood Speaks.. By the time we reach Exodus 11, Egypt has seen power. Pharaoh has seen signs. The gods of Egypt have been humiliated.

Yet nothing has changed.

Now God announces the final act — not just another plague, but a decisive moment in redemptive history.

Genesis Chapters 14 & 15

From the Table to the Sea, From Fear to Praise.. After the Passover, God does something surprising. He does not lead Israel directly out. Instead, He turns them back — toward the sea. “I will harden Pharaoh’s heart, and he will pursue them. But I will gain glory for myself.” (Exod 14:4). God intentionally places them where: There is no escape, No strategy and No human solution… Why??
Because faith formed at the table must now be tested in the open.

Genesis Chapters 16 & 17

Bread in the Wilderness, Water from the Rock.. As we continue the journey from the Red Sea into the wilderness, these chapters feel very human. The songs of chapter 15 fade quickly into the complaints of chapters 16 and 17. Yet what stands out most is not the instability of the people, but the steady character of God. These chapters reveal a God who provides daily bread for doubting hearts, water for thirsty souls, and victory for weary hands. Even in the face of forgetfulness and fear, His mercy continues.

Exodus Chapters 18 to 20

Formed at the Mountain: From Rescue to Relationship… Israel has been delivered from Egypt.The sea has opened.The bread has fallen.The water has flowed. Now begins something just as important: formation. God did not rescue Israel merely to free them from Pharaoh.He rescued them to bring them to Himself (Exod. 19:4). These chapters show a shift:from deliverance → to discipleship, from escape → to encounter, from slavery → to covenant…
